Well, Hot Dang – JoCo Finally Snagged Itself a Real Nature Preserve

Well, Hot Dang – JoCo Finally Snagged Itself a Real Nature Preserve.

Well, hot dang, folks—after years of developers eyeballing every last patch of dirt like it owes them money, Johnston County just went and did something downright respectable. 308 acres of pristine Neuse River bottomland near Clayton just got locked down as a brand-new nature preserve. That’s right, trees get to stay trees, critters get to keep crittering, and for once the bulldozers lost. Miracles do happen in JoCo.

Now before y’all start clapping too hard, let’s be real—this land was already protected under a conservation easement, so it wasn’t exactly a free-for-all to begin with. But still, having the county officially step in and call it a preserve feels like someone finally remembered we’re supposed to leave something for the grandkids besides asphalt and strip malls. The Neuse River floodplain thanks you, Johnston County. The turtles especially.

Local outdoorsy types are already plotting their next birdwatching conquests while the development crowd is probably somewhere muttering into their coffee. Nothing says “quality of life” like knowing there’s still a place nearby where you can hear frogs instead of jackhammers. Who knew preserving nature could actually be… popular?

So here’s to the 308-acre miracle in Clayton. May it stay wild, may the trails stay peaceful, and may every future developer who eyes that land get hit with the sudden urge to go hug a tree instead. Johnston County just scored one for the good guys—don’t let it go to your heads.
